Fujian Research Center for Digestive Diseases

General Introduction :
As the first clinical medical research institute in Fujian Province, Fujian Research Center for Digestive . Diseases was established in 1985 by Professor Chen Ximou, a famous expert in the field. After years of development, it now plays a key role in scientific and clinical research on digestive diseases in Fujian Province.

Recently, oriented by its focus on talent cultivation and research enhancement, the Center has undertaken a number of projects granted by National Natural Science Fund, Fujian Natural Science Fund, and other departmental and provincial research funds, and serves as the major provider of Master’s and PhD programs on the related field for potential candidates in Fujian Province.

The Center has a strong faculty of 6 professors and chief physicians,  5 associate professors and deputy chief physicians, and 3 chief technicians and chief laboratory technicians, including 10 PhD degree holders or PhD candidates. The Center’s current director, Professor Wang Xiaozhong, a visiting physician of the Medical College of New York University, graduated from Beijing University with a PhD in medicine. He is also a PhD supervisor, a member of Chinese Medical Association for Digestive Diseases, and director of the discipline of digestive diseases in Fujian Province.
The Center occupies an area of 110 square meters and is well-equipped for research on cell culturing, biochemical and immunological analysis, molecular biological study, and animal experiments. Its master and doctoral programs are mainly oriented to: the experimental and clinical research on hepatic fibrosis, the experimental and clinical research on digestive tumors and molecular virology of HBV (hepatitis B virus).

The ongoing programs include “The Effect of HBV X Gene Transfection on Hepatocyte Apoptosis and its Mechanism”, “The Anti-Hepatic Fibrosis Effect of Interleukin-10 in Rats and its Mechanism”, “The Expression of MMPs and TIMPs in Experimental Rat Hepatic Fibrosis”, “The Anti-Hepatic Fibrosis Effect of Interleukin-10 on the Activation and Proliferation of Hepatic Stellate Cells in Rats”, “The Mechanism of PreS1 in HBV Endocytosis through the Yeast Two-Hybrid System”, “The Research on Signaling Pathways of LOX-Mediated Gastric Cancer Cell Proliferation and Apoptosis” and “The Effect of HBV X Gene on the Mitochondria Structure and Function of HL-7702”. It has obtained a research funding of RMB 3 million, published 45 articles on SCI and Medline enlisted journals, and won 8 times Fujian Science & Technology Progress Award, of which “The Anti-Experimental Hepatic Fibrosis Effect of IL-10 and its Mechanism” won the second prize for Fujian Science & Technology Progress Award in 2005 and “Research on the Functions of HBV X Protein” won the second prize for Fujian Science & Technology Progress Award in 2006.

The Center has an exclusive ward area, digestive endoscopes and GI function labs, relieving the pain of thousands of patients every year. It will carry on its mission and continue to make contribution to the research on the digestive diseases in Fujian Province, clinically and experimentally.
