Fujian Research Institute of Ophthalmology

Subordinate to the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University, Fujian Research Institute of Ophthalmology is a modern provincial ophthalmological institute which integrates clinic, teaching and scientific research. The institute now owns 48 beds for clinical research. Presently, there are 28 researchers, including 7 professors, 5 associate professors, 7 M.D.s, 8 masters, 5 senior and intermediate technicians, 1 doctoral supervisor of ophthalmology, and 8 master supervisors. Professor Xu Guo-xing, subject leader, doctoral supervisor, committee member of Chinese Ophthalmological Society, standing committee member of Chinese Ophthalmological Association, standing committee member of Ophthalmology Committee of CAIM and chairman of Fujian Ophthalmology Society, gains the State Council special allowance. The institute has set up the Prevention and Treatment Center of Children’s Strabismus and Amblyopia, the Clinical Ophthalmology Laboratory, the Basic Ophthalmology  Laboratory and the Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine Ophthalmology Laboratory.

In recent years, the institute has been equipped with instruments for basic and clinical ophthalmological research, including ROLAND (Germany) multifunctional electrophysiology determinator, Zeiss (Germany) optics coherent tomography(OCT3), Canon (Japan) choroid and eye fundus fluorescein radiography, OCTOPUS (Switzerland) automatic perimeter, STORZ and MILLENNIUM (USA) vitreous body cutter and ultrasonic lens mulser, CO2 refrigerator (U.K.), ZeissYAG (Germany) laser therapeutic apparatus and argon-ion laser therapeutic apparatus, Leica (Switzerland) operating microscope, OTI (Canada) three-dimensional ophthalmic A/B ultrasonograph and ultrasound biomicroscopy, and THERMO FORMA (USA) CO2 cell incubator, etc.

The institute is specialized in research on the pathogenesis and prevention-and-treatment measures of cataract, glaucoma, retinal degeneration, diabetic ophthalmopathy, infectious keratitis and children’s strabismus and amblyopia, as well as the application of stem cells in retina disease treatment, the optic nerve protection of glaucoma, the basic and clinical research based on integrated traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine, the prevention and treatment of blindness and the epidemiologic survey on ophthalmopathy, etc.

The institute has undertaken 5 state-level, 15 province-level and department-level scientific research programs. Members of the institute have published more than 200 articles in domestic and foreign core  journals, including 13 articles in SCI journals. The institute has won 1 second prize of State Science and Technology Progress Award (as a cooperation institute), 1 second prize and 8 third prizes of Fujian Science and Technology Award, 1 second prize of Fujian Medical Science and Technology Award, 6 Science and Technology prizes awarded by Fujian Provincial Department of Public Health, 1 first prize of Fujian Teaching Achievements Award and 1 invention patent authorized by State Intellectual Property Office of the P.R.C. The institute members have been the chief-editors and co-editors of 7 college textbooks listed in the State “11th Five-Year Plan” and the “10th/11th Five –Year Plan”.
