The School of Public Health, was set up in 1959 (formerly known as the Department of Health). Thanks to this establishment, Fujian Medical University became one of a handful universities which  were able to provide the undergraduate course of preventive medicine at that time. In 1964, the first 200 students graduated. However, the Department of Preventive Medicine was suspended in 1965, and officially re-launched in 1978. In 2001, the School of Public Health was established on the foundation of the former Department of Preventive Medicine. Since then, it has already been developed into a multi-disciplinary, specialized, multi-level teaching base and scientific research center for the talents of Preventive Medicine and Health Management in Fujian Province, which takes undergraduate courses as the foundation, attaches great importance to graduate education, and actively develops the system further education.

Currently the school has a total number of 67 staff members. With 46 full-time teachers, over 90% have obtained master’s degrees. There are 9 professors and 20 master supervisors and doctoral supervisors and 2 College teachers in Fujian province. The school has 10 specialist professional (or professional direction), with a level of public health and preventive medicine disciplines and Social Medicine and Health Service Management II, the discipline master, has a Master degree authorization of Public Health (MPH) .The school provides 5 majors for undergraduates and the Department of Medical Research Center, public health and general practice training center, contains "Epidemiology and Health Statistics", "Occupational and Environmental Health", "Nutrition and Health medicine", "Health management and Social medicine", "Community health and General practice". Presently, the school has an enrolment of more than 1600 full-time students, containing more than 150 PhD and Masters. Established in 2007, The Institute for Environment and Health of Fujian Medical University, further established  in 2010, The Center for Health Policy Research of Fujian Medical University.

Currently, the school practices the Environment and Health as provincial key disciplines, and 5 provincial key disciplines and key labs, including the Provincial key Lab in Preventive Medicine. In the aspect of practice, the school now has over 20 vocational and clinical training bases outside of  the campus, including Fujian Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The long history of school management has laid the foundation for  high-quality teaching. In 2009, the school was designated as the construction site of National Characteristic Specialty of preventive medicine, and it also has been approved as the provincial demonstration center of preventive medicine and the provincial experimental center of personnel training in preventive medicine. The existence of 6 Provincial Excellent Courses including hygienic toxicology and over 10 school-level Excellent Courses witnesses the tremendous efforts of the staff members. Meanwhile, the school has accomplished considerable success in scientific research and has won various awards, including the National Science Conference Award, municipal first prize for Progress in Science and Technology of Beijing, over 30 second and third provincial-level prizes for scientific research achievements. In the last decade, the school has taken in over 50 research projects which were sponsored by the provincial and national natural science funds. Over 30 monographs and more than 400 research papers have been published, of which 40 can be searched by SCI. The research fund has aggregated to more than 12 million. The school focuses on building up its international interchanges and collaborations in a wide range. Dozens of people have visited more than ten different countries and areas all over the world. It maintains a good collaborative relationship with universities like the Medical College of Nagasaki University. The school has fostered more than 5000 middle and high ranking personnel in preventive medicine and general practice. It has contributed considerably to the course of public health and preventive medicine in the west coast area of the strait.
